Ketchup has other components in it besides tomato, and it is used to add flavor.

I was surprised ketchup is used. What does this add to the dish? Does it add a tomato flavor? Or is it just used to thicken the sauce?

Hi Rowena,
You can omit the chili, but ketchup is essential.
Thanks.

Deanna,
You are absolutely correct and therefore there isn’t any curry powder in this recipe 🙂

It is a misconception. You may have to edit your statement. In Australia, yes, they call it Singapore noodles and sometimes it contains curry powder. Singaporeans will shudder if we see or taste curry powder in our fried beehoon.
